Is it really ALL about PROFIT? Is money really your primary driver? Is money really all that important? I know what you are thinking. “Is she really serious?” Yes, I’m serious! Remember Step 1 in the Series – The 8 Steps from Passion to Profit? Did you ask yourself WHY you were in business, why you were a manager or leader of your team or department? If you did, what was your answer? Was it “to make money”? If it was, you probably aren’t finished asking WHY?
Last year I had the tremendous privilege of being part of a Mastermind Group led by Greg Habstritt, the founder of Simple Wealth. He asked us to answer the question WHY? So here’s how it worked.
- Determine what question you want to answer.
- Ask the Question.
- Now take the answer to that question and ask WHY again.
- Now that the answer to that question and ask WHY again.
- Go through the process 10 times! Yep – 10 tiimes. What’s your final answer?

Q. Why is customer service important to me?
A. Two reasons, firstly it’s important to me in terms of my integrity and reputation and in addition it aids in retention.
Q. Why is retention important to me?
A. Because I want my business to grow and it costs more to get new business than to retain existing business and I get more referrals.
Q. Why do I want referrals?
A. Because that’s the easiest way to write new business.
Q. Why do I want to write new business?
A. I want my business to grow and ultimately have a better sale price when I decide to retire.
Q. Why is a better sale price important to you for your retirement?
A. I want to retire comfortably.
Q. Why do I want to retire comfortably?
A. I don’t want to have to worry for awhile?
Q. Why don’t you want to worry?
A. I want to be able to relax and then find something that I can be really passionate about in my retirement.
Q. Why do you want to find something that you can be passionate about in your retirement?
A. That comes back to my self-worth and self-esteem. I want to leave things better than I found them.
Q. Why is that important?
A. It’s part of my nature to contribute!
Get it now? I’ll make you a bet. Have you answeredyour 10 Questions yet? I’ll bet it isn’t really all about the money after all. It’s what you can do with the money, be it a comfortable lifestyle for you and your family or the ability to contribute to society. It’s not really about the destination; it’s about the journey. It’s about what you did to get there – that feeling of accomplishment, how you contributed to your employees, peers, customers and suppliers.
Now don’t get me wrong. If you aren’t making a profit in the business you are hooped! Money is the means by which we trade one service or product for another. It’s a tool; a measuring stick but not an end.
